Well, it's finally over. The Pac 10 regular season is complete and for the first time in four years, someone other than UCLA has been named Pac 10 Champions. Congratulations go to the Washington Huskies for a job well done, and for surprising nearly everyone along the way.

Now it's on to the Pac 10 Tournament so I thought we'd change things up. Rather than continue on with my Power Rankings (I hope they were fun for you all), I thought that we can do more general discussion of the Pac 10 Tournament and then the NCAA Tournament as it occurs.

The Pairings

Game 1....Oregon State (8) vs Stanford (9)
Oregon State has had a magical season, no denying it. OSU had the second biggest increase in number of Pac 10 wins from one season to the next in Pac 10 history (7). People forget that this Oregon State team went 0-18 just a season ago, and this year they actually have an outside shot at an NIT birth. Stanford is a bit of an anomaly. These guys started out playing very good but as it turns out, it was against one of the easiest non conference schedules in the nation. Pac 10 games proved to be much too difficult as Stanford limped to a 6-12 Pac 10 record and a #9 seed. Prediction? The magic continues...
Oregon State 61 Stanford 55

Game 2... Washington State (7) vs Oregon (10)
Not much to say about this one. Oregon is playing a bit better, 2-2 in their last four, but Washington State is playing as good as anyone in the Pac 10 right now. I don't think anyone will want to play them in a second round match up. Prediction?
Washington State 68 Oregon 55

Game 3... Arizona State (4) vs Arizona (5)
What a match up! Arizona State won both match ups during the year (for the first time in over a decade) but they won the two games by 6 points and 2 points in OT. They are facing an Arizona team that has lost a lot of games lately and is squarely on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament and needs a win. This is the titanic match up of two teams that don't seem to be playing quite as well as their talent would suggest they should. Prediction? UA prevents an ASU hat trick...
Arizona 76 Arizona State 72

Game 4... Washington (1) vs Game 1 winner (8 or 9)
No matter which way you cut it, Washington is on a mission. There is still a lot of people who hesitate in giving them credit, due to their early season performance. A Pac 10 tournament championship would go a long way to eliminating the questions. To add, Washington is playing for a #3 seed, which they should lock up with a Pac 10 Tournament Championship. Although I can't give a score since I am not sure who they will play, my prediction is that UW moves on.
Washington

Game 5... California (3) vs Southern Cal (6)
USC is another one of those teams with a ton of talent. Still it doesn't matter if you don't use it. This one will be close, but in the end, the better TEAM will win, and Mike Montgomery has his team playing as a TEAM. Prediction?
California 89 Southern Cal 80

Game 6... UCLA (2) vs Game 2 winner (7 or 10)
All I can say is that I hope that Oregon upsets Washington State because Wazzu is gelling at just the right time. Not only did they hang with UW for the entire game to wind down the Pac 10 regular season but they beat this same UCLA team in Los Angeles less than a month ago. I am almost inclined to take an upset if Wazzu makes it to this round since they match up well against UCLA but I'm gonna go with experience. Prediction?
UCLA moves on.
Game 7... Winner of Game 3 vs Winner of Game 4
For this one, the winner of Arizona and Arizona State plays the winner of Washington and Oregon State/Stanford. I am pretty confident that UW will be in this game and if they are, it should be a phenomenal match up. UW is the best all-around team in the Pac 10, but if they struggle against any teams, it's generally against good shooting/up tempo teams like Arizona. Then again, ASU presents their own challenge in that UW is 2-0 against them this season... It's really difficult to go 3-0 against a good team in a single season. Prediction?
Washington advances to the final BARELY!
Game 8... Winner of Game 5 vs Winner of Game 6
This game is going to match up either UCLA, Washington State or Oregon against either California or Southern Cal. I think if you are a UCLA fan this is the draw you want. IF they get by Wazzu (which I think is almost a pick 'em game) I just don't see California or USC matching up that well. Just as UW struggles against the up temp teams, UCLA thrives against them. This is why they have handled both Cal and USC this season. If Wazzu makes it this far, I also see them going on, but given my original Game 6 prediction?
UCLA handles either California or Southern Cal.
Game 9... Washington (1) vs UCLA (2)
This is going to be an absolute barn burner. In their first meeting this season, UW led by just two points with less than six minutes to go before pulling away for an eleven point victory. In the rematch, UCLA led by two with under four minutes to go before pulling away for a nine point victory. Essentially the exact same thing happened in both games, but with opposite outcomes. So, if we are lucky enough that this game happens AGAIN, what happens in the rubber match?
Well, my thoughts are simple. Both teams are good defensively and both teams are good offensively. I give UCLA the edge offensively given that they are the top shooting team in the nation at 51%. I also give UCLA the edge defensively with respect to the ability to complete shut teams down. Unfortunately, UCLA's biggest challenge is that because of their youth, they haven't shown that they can play great defense for long stretches, where as UW can. Other comparisons...
Point Guard... Like it or not, Darren Collison is the best in the Pac 10. All you need to do is look at his stats. However, Justin Dentmon does seem to have his number which is why I am scoring this one as even. Collison for overall impact for on the game and Dentmon for his ability to score and match up with Collison. Score card? Draw
Shooting Guard...Isaiah Thomas gets a clear edge in the match up of freshmen. Jrue Holiday is clearly the second best freshman in the Pac 10 but he hasn't been as necessary for UCLA as Thomas has been for UW. Still, in my opinion Thomas should be the NATIONAL freshman of the Year, not just for the Pac 10. Score card? Isaiah Thomas
Forward/Guard (3rd position)... Josh Shipp has had a very interesting career with UCLA, going from an injury-plagued player with promise, to a player that lost his shot for most of last year to the player you see today. On the other side of the ball, you have either Venoy Overton (G) or Matthew Bryan-Amaning (F), both of which have been solid this season for UW. This might surprise a lot of people reading but this one isn't close. No player in the Pac 10 is as dominating a scorer and play maker as Josh Shipp is right now. He has been flat out amazing, establishing new career highs in scoring twice in the last week, not to mention his domination over UW throughout this season and last is well documented. Shipp is hitting 18 for 29 from behind the arc (63%) over the past six games and has begun to be creative in the lane as he is finally playing at the All-America level he was thought to become out of high school. It might be too little too late for that, but not for this game. I look for Shipp to be the same dominating force that has averaged 22 points per game over the past three weeks. That, coupled with the fact that neither Overton or Amaning have been impact players against UCLA and my choice was easy. Score card? Josh Shipp
Forward (4Th position)... This one appears that it shouldn't be close either, but upon further review, it's much closer than one would think. On one hand, we have Quincy Pondexter for UW. Pondexter has been stellar this season,. averaging nearly 12 points a game, but more importantly being a force inside to help out Brockman. Pondexter's true worth is with the fact that he forces people to play off of Brockman just long enough to help create lanes for their three lightning fast guards. On the other side of the ball we have the improbably Nikola Dragovic. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY expected Dragovic to be a starter at this point in the season. He came off the bench at the beginning of the season and created a spark with his incredible three point shooting. Possibly the purest or streakiest three point shooter in the Pac 10, Dragovic has honed in his game and has actually learned to play inside the arc as the season has gone on. Conversely, Pondexter has also learned to be creative with his shot as the season went on. I would be inclined to give this one to Pondexter based on pure talent, but I give Dragovic the edge on game impact as I have seen him personally win three games by hitting back-to back-to-back 3's to turn a one point game into a ten pint game. As good as Pondexter is, I have yet to see him take over a game. To me, that makes the ultimate difference. Score card? Nikola Dragovic
Center/ Forward (5Th position). I absolutely love this match up. Jon Brockman is clearly the best big man in the Pac 10, but for some reason Alfred Aboya has not only held his own against him, he has frustrated Brockman into fouling out, which rarely happens. Brockman is a better low block scorer, a better rebounder, and as good of a passer as is Aboya. They both have incredible heart, and Aboya has a better mid range jump shot (which he developed this season). When it comes down to it, you have a person in Aboya who is a great interior role player but he will be one of many that will platoon in an effort to stop Brockman, so at the end of the day, this one is easy. Score card? Jon Brockman.
Ok, so we are at 2-2-1, so that didn't answer anything.
UCLA clearly has better depth.
UW clearly has more experience top to bottom.
UCLA is better shooting
UW is better defending the shot.
UCLA has a better trap defense
UW is better at driving to the hoop...
Ah what the heck... enough waffling...
Prediction? Washington 81-80 (2 OT)
Upsets to watch for...
Washington State over UCLA (Game 6)
Arizona or Arizona State over Washington (Game 7)
California over UCLA (Game 8)
Happy Hunting!
