Well, Whose the best in the Pac? Who has been the most powerful Pac 10 team thus far?
It's time for my first installment of the Pac 10 Power Rankings. Now, keep in mind that these rankings are an idication of how a team has played, not how a team will play in the future. With that being said, here's my take...
1. UCLA (1-0)
Only one game played thus far, but they own the biggest win against the best team any Pac 10 team has played this season, so UCLA wins the early prize.
2.Southern Cal (1-0)
Of course, USC is probably the best team in the Pac 10, but right now they only get the number 2 spot, despite their blowout victory over virginia on the road. This is likely to change come Sunday.
3. California (2-0)
The next four teams are tough to consider. I went with Cal because they not only demolished Washington State in the Palouse, the handled a Michigan State team that should be good enough for seven wins this season.
4. Oregon (2-0)
Oregon get's the next spot simply because of the way they handled UW with a back up QWB. These guys appear to be for real and are playing like it. Of course the 42 point vicory over Utah State didn't hurt.
5. Arizona State (2-0)
Just like Oregon, ASU got a blow out win against a subpar Pac 10 team (Stanford). The only reason I listed them below Oregon is because Oregon was more impressive against Utah State than ASU was against Northern Arizona. Bother were impressive, but Utah State is a bit better competition.
6. Arizona (2-0)
It's too bad that I need to list UA so low despite two blowout wins where they absolutely crushed their opponents. the challenge isn't that they're not good... it's that their victories were against Idaho and Toledo. neither of these teams should even count, but that's beside the point. Arizona has one more cupcake to play and then we can talk, but until then, I don't see them moving much.
7. Stanford (1-1)
Well, Stanford must be at #7 because the last three teams haven't won a game yet. The win over Oregon State appeared to be good but given the way OSU played against a good team, that win may have lost some of it's luster... especially after the royal butt-whoopin' that Stanford suffered at the hands of ASU.
8. Washington (0-2)
UW deserves to be at #8 because despite being 0-2, and despite getting destroyed by Oregon in week one, they played a very good opponent in BYU to a stand still. This means, if you buy BYU as a top 15 team, that UW can play and compete with anyone. Whether they can actually win the games is another story.
9. Oregon State(0-2)
Lost a cometitive game against Stanford but then blown out against Penn State. That game was not pretty and the only reason OSU is not in the cellar for this week is because of the team below them and how they've performed in the first couple weeks.
10. Washington State (0-2)
What can I say. Blown out in a loss to Oklahoma State and then blown out again by California. Things will get better for wazzu, but it might not get much better this year. I guess we'll see.
