First, my apologies for missing last week,. Valentines Day week was very busy for me. Still, it's kind of ironic that despite taking a week off, many of the major players are still near the top, and very little new information was learned about these teams. So quickly, I will list my Power rankings with their week 5 ranking in parentheses.
1. California (LW #2)
Over the past two weeks, California has played extremely well, as they hammered UCLA, Washington and Washington State. They lost a close one to USC, but given that it was on the road, we'll give them a break.
2. Southern Cal (LW #6)
I had to jump USC way up because they knocked off a very good Cal team. They also completed a rare single season sweep of UCLA, and they have jumped all the way up to #3 in the conference. They might be tough coming down the stretch.
3. Washington (LW #5)
This one was a tough one to call. On the one hand, UW was beaten pretty handily by cal, but on the other hand, they have won three out of their last four, just like ASU, and I ultimately gave UW the nod because they beat ASU.
4. Arizona State (LW #4)
ASU has won three of four just like UW, but their one loss was to UW and their wins were all against teams in the bottom half of the conference.
5. UCLA (LW #3)
Ok, I went with UCLA at #5. Bottom line is their UCLA losing two of three (their two losses coming in a close one to USC and a game where they hung with Cal until mid way through the second half) was better than Arizona losing 3 of 4 (including a loss to Oregon State).
6. Oregon State (LW #9)
In case you're wondering why I would put a mediocre OSU team over an Arizona school with a big up side... that's easy... OSU is 2-0 against Arizona. They might not be a better teams than the Cats, but they certainly are a better team head to head, all argument to the contrary was lost last week.
7. Arizona (LW #1)
Keep in mind, UA didn't drop six spots in one week. Remember, I skipped a week? Since then, UA has gone 1-3 with a second loss to Oregon state and getting beaten handily by the Washington schools.
8. Stanford (LW #10)
None of the last three schools are playing very well right now, but the bottom line is that Stanford squeaked by WSU last week, which is too bad, because WSU hammered Arizona, so WSU was real close to sitting at #7, but because of their loss to Stanford...
9. Washington State (LW #8)
It's tough for WSU. They have the same problem most Pac 10 teams have... INCONSISTENCY. They are just a bit more inconsistent, right now, than most.
10. Oregon (LW #7)
Oregon has spent more time at #10 than anyone else (three weeks) and two weeks ago, they loosed like they were on the move after knocking off UCLA and USC in consecutive games. But alas, it was not meant to be. Getting hammered by Oregon State, ASU and Arizona after than will b ring you back to earth real quick.
Happy Hunting!
